Brown's Town Training Centre Upgraded

Some $3 million have been spent on upgrading the Brown's Town Training Centre, says Member of Parliament for North West St. Ann, Othneil Lawrence.

Mr. Lawrence told the House of Representatives on Tuesday (July 28) that the funds were part of a $5 million expenditure on education-related projects in the constituency last year.

The project also involved the renaming of the Brown's Town-based facility as the North West St. Ann Training Centre. An additional $6 million is to be spent this year on the facility, the MP said. He was speaking in the 2009/10 Sectoral Debate in Gordon House on Tuesday (July 28).

79 Year-Old Graduates from Literacy Programme

At the recent Yo Si Puedo (Yes I Can) Literacy Programme graduation ceremony, in Gayle, St. Mary, a 79 year-old man sat proudly among his fellow teenage and middle age graduates.

Jepthah McIntosh was only 9 years old when his father died and his primary education came to a sudden halt, as he had to become 'man of the house', dimming his chances of going to a secondary school or even college.

$1 Billion Housing Project to be Undertaken under TEF

A sum of $1 billion has been earmarked under the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF) for the development of infrastructure in the tourism resort areas, particularly relating to housing and settlement.

Minister of Tourism, Edmund Bartlett, made the announcement at yesterday's (July 1) post Cabinet press briefing held at Jamaica House, where he informed of a number of tourism development projects that are being undertaken through funding from the TEF, which has a balance of some $3 billion.
